Salary Range

$99,700 – $196,100 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate¿s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking R&D Biological Scientist (job title: R&D S&E, Biological Science) to work with a multidisciplinary team of researchers in Molecular and Microbiology who are passionate about attaining success while solving some of society’s greatest challenges. The successful candidate will apply their expertise in biodefense and/or biomanufacturing to lead impactful research programs in our exceptional bioscience program. You will have the opportunity to develop novel research strategies to expand our program into new areas aligned with your expertise and interest. Your responsibilities will include leading externally funded research projects and teams, developing research plans, generating results, and publishing high impact papers and proposals to expand the current bioscience program. You will have the satisfaction of knowing your efforts will have national and international impact.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Plan and execute experimental research involving novel tools designed to improve existing and emerging technologies to meet project goals and targets
  • Publish original research in high impact journals and present original research at conferences
  • Formally and informally communicate results and findings to co-workers and sponsors
  • Identify, develop, and propose new research ideas in areas that support Sandia mission activities
  • Collaborate with other R&D Biological Scientists at Sandia to secure funding for, and implement new projects
  • Mentor and direct staff as appropriate
  • Write proposals for research awards from government funding agencies

Qualifications We Require

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or a related field
  • At least 5 years of experience in research and development after completion of PhD
  • Record of strong technical contributions and excellent written and oral communication skills, as demonstrated by conference presentations and/or peer-reviewed publications
  • Strong grant-writing skills as measured by a record of developing funded programs from sponsors such as, but not limited to DOE, DoD, DHS, or NIH
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • Demonstrated ability to build and develop strong interdisciplinary teams and partnerships across organizational boundaries
  • Proven experience in planning and conducting research to support new technology development
  • Proven collaboration with, and mentorship of, other scientists
  • Experience working with government sponsors such as Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Defense on programs in biodefense, biomanufacturing, biofuels, or climate remediation

About Our Team

The Molecular and Microbiology Department sits within the Chemical/Biological/Radiological/Nuclear Defense and Energy Technologies Center. The Center performs exploratory science and develops technology to address pressing national needs in energy security, homeland security, and national defense. Through extensive partnerships inside and outside Sandia, the Center is focused on understanding and countering natural, traditional and engineered biological threats, as well as on developing alternative lignocellulosic and algal-derived transportation biofuels. The Molecular and Microbiology Department conducts fundamental and applied research in cell biology, immunology, genomics, phagomics, microbiomics, materials science and microbiology, with a focus on the development and use of innovative bioanalytical technologies such as synthetic biology, nanotechnology, multi-omics, advanced optical imaging, and data analysis tools to advance the understanding of biological systems. Key sponsors include the DOE Office of Science (Biological and Environmental Research; Basic Energy Sciences), the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Advanced Research Project Agency-Energy, Department of Defense, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Department of Homeland Security, and the National Institutes of Health.

Security Clearance
