Tuknik Government Services, a Koniag Government Services Company, is seeking an experienced Data Center Tech Lead (SME) – Facilities Support to support TGS and our government customer in Durham, NC.

Position Overview:

The Computer Facilities Center and Branch is responsible for short and long-range data center space allocation and resource planning, hardware installation, and manipulation of IT equipment to include mainframe hardware supporting programmatic, administrative, management information, statistical application systems, telecommunications network, electronic messaging system, and computer infrastructure and telecommunications equipment. The Data Center Tech Lead will provide contractor team leadership, and facilities operations support, in our client’s raised-floor computer room environments, to include site development and maintenance in support of any approved client projects for open systems, mainframe support, data cabling, vendor engagement, business continuity, HVAC oversight, outside agency support, and developing and implementing, facilities for both mainframe and open systems. In addition, to the large number of equipment installations and projected incoming equipment, the Data Center Tech Lead must be capable of performing the duties described below with minimal supervision, and well as provide Lead guidance to contractor peers, and support to our client staff, vendors, and contactor management leadership. The Lead will work closely with the client to produce deliverables as defined by customer guidelines and SOPs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Lead a team of Data Center technicians by planning & allocating work assignments.
  • Perform personnel management tasks of a team of 10 – 15 staff including managing shift assignments, labor charging, performance assessment and review, etc.
  • Analyze and make recommendations for all hardware installations regarding physical and logical constraints. Recommend physical location and cabling configurations of the hardware and facilitates implementation.
  • Verify cable layouts, lengths, and labeling, and the physical layout of hardware and cables in accordance with proposed configuration charts. Document associated installation details in the ticketing system.
  • Prepare assigned work orders to modify the facility for installation of network equipment. The work orders will include change record number, due dates, types of cables needed to complete installation, information on hardware requiring installation, troubleshooting, and problem resolution details and notes.
  • Install/uninstall equipment and provide status updates regarding the completeness of installation or the remaining activities necessary to finish installation.
  • Install single-mode fiber, multi-mode fiber, RJ45 Terminable, InfiniBand, and any other cables utilized in the IT infrastructure.
  • Perform computer facilities space and environmental planning and provide analyses regarding power utilization and impact on cooling capacity.
  • Resolve network problems and manage ongoing configuration decisions relating to the physical layout of the supported network infrastructure system, and present to task manager via AutoCAD drawing and/or written report.
  • Maintain equipment inventories on the client’s SharePoint.
  • Update and develop specialized information reports as directed. (“Panel schedules” would be an example of a specialized report.’
  • Configure and implement solutions compatible with DCOI (Data Center Optimization Initiative) and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) asset management solutions.
  • Plan the installation of mainframe and Open Systems equipment including all facility related activities (e.g., power, cabling, air circulation.)
  • Develop detailed mainframe migration plans to include a step-by-step approach to the relocation and delivery of hardware systems and equipment to the computer room according to timeframes and parameters established by client’s project schedules.
  • Develop complete site preparation documents for designated raised floor areas.
  • Develop all documentation to request building modifications/alterations necessary to install and operate hardware at the proposed site. Documentation shall include power requirements, panel schedules, and scope of work. Physically verify that all facilities are properly prepared, prior to the installation of hardware into such facilities.
  • Perform on-site inspections of the following: electrical service (including panel loads, outlets, and power and grounding requirements), Uninterruptible Power Supplies, HVAC requirements (including humidity levels and supplemental requirements for equipment), security, and fire detection systems.

Facilitate support activities which include certification of the following:

  • HVAC systems
  • raised floor load ratings
  • verification of communications cable distance specification compliance
  • placement of floor tile cutout
  • layout of chilled water lines and plan conformance to local codes
  • removal of floor tiles
  • physical movement/placement of the equipment
  • Pack, insure, ship, and receive designated office/computer equipment to/from designated locations.

Work Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business or other related scientific or technical discipline. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • Must have at least seven (7) years of relevant, IT-based experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Data Center Facilities Ops/Personnel Management, and customer/account management.
  • HSPD-12 Suitability
  • Minimum 5 years data center experience in a facilities engineering / electrical support / raised-floor environment.
  • Have Data Center Energy Practitioner (DCEP) technician certification in good standing and commit to maintaining as needed.
  • Experience with implementing solutions and instructing/training team members with DCOI (Data Center Optimization Initiative) and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) asset management solutions.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of most of the skills and technologies described and must be able to quickly learn, with provided training, those skills, and technologies in which they lack the requisite experience.
  • Must be capable of performing the duties described with minimal supervision. The Lead will work closely with team to produce the deliverables required.
  • Thorough knowledge of telecommunication links and modes of data transmission, including all cable configurations. Must be capable of manufacturing various cables on short notice with provided supplies.
  • Expertise shall include installation of servers, routers, switches, etc., and all associated hardware, cable installation, and housing of equipment in cabinets, with the primary emphasis on safety.
  • Understanding the setup and workings of a multi-platform environment, which includes knowledge of all types of mainframe equipment (i.e., Z15, Z16 processors or latest processors), servers, different types of DASD and vendors, tape drives, and tape silos. Understand the power requirements and the connectivity of the equipment (fiber and Copper) via FICON directors, ESCON, and fiber.
  • Able to utilize both mechanical (hand tools, drills, etc.) and electronic (meters, oscilloscopes etc.) devices to perform assigned functions.
  • Duties frequently require lifting or manipulating equipment, and some equipment can weigh well over 100 pounds, and require experience with manipulation of mechanical lifts or other similar lifting devices.
  • Possess strong written and oral command of the English language.
  • Must be able to obtain a client sponsored HSPD-12/Public Trust level Suitability.
  • This position is considered Essential/Mission Critical, which means the employee is expected to report for work and/or remain at work despite late reporting, early dismissal and/or closure due to weather conditions.
  • Occasional holiday or weekend coverage may be required in accordance with contractual needs.
  • Government contract may require person to possess proof of U.S. citizenship.
