The School of Medicine’s Division of Medical Oncology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Entry Laboratory Science Professional in the CU Center for Rare Melanomas.

Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities. Functions include general laboratory organization (ordering reagents and supplies, equipment maintenance) performing bench experiments, preparing and submitting patient specimens for analysis, research animal management and experiments, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Professionals at the entry level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the entry level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and are performed in a training and development capacity.

Nature of Work

Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed. Please note, working in the evening or working on weekends may be required and reviewed on a project-by-project basis within the research laboratory. The position will require research laboratory bench work skills, moderate lifting of research laboratory supplies, handling of research laboratory animals and good hand to eye coordination.

This Entry Laboratory Science Professional will be supporting the CU Center for Rare Melanomas, whose focus is to better understand how rare melanomas develop, function, and respond to treatment to improve care for, and ultimately cure, patients with rare melanomas. We are using our unique resource of rare melanoma patient specimens and pre-clinical models to perform cutting-edge translational science which will ultimately help better prevent, diagnose, and treat rare forms of melanoma.

Examples of Duties Performed

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigator (PI) with laboratory and research functions
  • Performing basic molecular biology lab techniques including but not limited to PCR, qPCR, western blotting, and nucleic acid extraction
  • Maintaining cell cultures and performing cell culture experiments such as viability assays, invasion assays, and transfections
  • Animal work, including maintaining and treating melanoma patient-derived xenograft tumor mouse models, syngeneic melanoma mouse models, and humanized mouse models
  • General lab inventory, supply ordering, organization, and equipment maintenance
  • Expected to attend and present relevant research data at weekly lab and journal club meetings

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with mouse models of cancer.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
  • Strong Molecular Biology background
  • Ability to be both team-oriented and work independently learning new research lab techniques.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work well with other lab members.
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Willingness to work with murine tumor models.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Previous lab and animal experience is beneficial, but not required.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $40,280 to $51,236.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
