The role:
ODOT has an immediate need for qualified field technicians in the Portland metro area as well as the Northern Oregon Coast. We will use this recruitment to fill vacancies in Portland and Warrenton. As a field technician, you will work independently to perform routine maintenance, repairs and modifications to heavy equipment specialized for highway maintenance and construction. A day in the life:
  • Perform all phases of equipment diagnosis and repair.
  • Conduct inspections and tests to troubleshoot issues.
  • Adjust, modify, replace and/or repair components on construction and snow removal equipment.
  • Repair hydraulic systems on various types of construction equipment.
  • Use electronic testing equipment and software to identify issues.
  • Use mobile and stationary welding and cutting equipment to maintain highway maintenance equipment.
  • Track hours spent on projects and submit reports as needed.
  • Drive and operate a loaded service truck in all weather conditions and at all hours based on customer need.
  • Use of personal protective equipment is required – work may be performed in all weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes and various chemicals.
  • Ability to perform hard physical labor in and around construction equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Overnight travel and overtime work may be required.

What we need:
Six (6) years of experience as a journeyman heavy equipment mechanic.
Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business; you must possess a current, valid commercial driver’s license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, and no air brake restrictions, OR have the ability to acquire one within six months of hire (ODOT will cover training and costs) to be considered eligible for this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse registration and full query check for our final candidate(s) and annual query for current employees.

  • Fabrication and welding experience with the ability to design, build and fabricate with a drawing and minimal input.

  • Experience with fleet management software or similar systems.
  • Experience administering a preventative maintenance program across diverse fleet of equipment.
