GENERAL INFORMATION: Brightpoint Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education and one of the largest of the 23 community colleges in Virginia. RESPONSIBILITIES: Counsel students and their families on the financial aid application process. The counselor will work with staff to ensure quality customer service and office coverage. Perform verification on Federal Student Aid applications. Package student financial aid awards according to federal, state, and institutional guidelines. Conduct financial aid and literacy workshops and presentations on both on campus and virtually. Serve on the Appeals Committee to review satisfactory academic progress and/or special circumstance appeals. The position will be required to work at both Chester and Midlothian campus. The Financial Aid Counselor must have extensive experience with PeopleSoft Processing, Canvas, Blackboard, Customer Service, and Perceptive Concepts Imaging System. The Counselor will be responsible for the review of applications, determination of awards, maintaining compliance with aid regulations, and communication with families about financial aid eligibility. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Financial Aid.

QUALIFICATIONS: Prior experience counseling students in financial aid. Prior working experience in financial aid in an academic setting is required. Also required: knowledge of and experience in administering federal & state financial aid regulations in a higher education setting; proficiency using Microsoft Office software; excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills; and the ability to work well independently and as a member of a team. Experience with technology is required. PeopleSoft experience preferred, as well as prior experience counseling students at the higher education level. Supervisory experience preferred. Ability to multi-task and prioritize work. Collaboratively develop and implement innovative strategies and programs. The ability to work independently and resolve technical problems. Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check will be required. High School diploma required.

  • All full-time classified employees new to the Commonwealth of Virginia will serve a 12-month probationary period.
