Overview

Great Lakes Environmental Center, Inc. (GLEC) is recruiting highly motivated candidates for full-time benefited Laboratory/Field Technician positions at our headquarters in Traverse City, Michigan. GLEC is an established employee-owned contract research firm that is a national leader in protecting aquatic environmental resources through work for federal, state, industrial, and non-profit organizations. Typical responsibilities for these positions include providing laboratory assistance at our Traverse City, Michigan facility and field sampling assistance at various locations through the U.S. The work schedule may include holidays, weekends, and some work days over 8 hours.

Applicants should have an interest in aquatic biology/ecology or related fields. Although these positions are primarily laboratory assignments, successful applicants will also be expected to assist in field studies which may require overnight travel (travel cost provided). Additional experience in the following areas would be a benefit but is not required: whole effluent toxicity (WET) methods, processing macroinvertebrate samples, nucleic acid extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques, and operation of small boats on inland lakes and rivers. A determined work ethic, ability to follow directions, ability to read and navigate using maps and GPS, field experience, and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting are desirable traits.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work alongside laboratory/field staff to ensure efficient sample collection and processing.
  • Assist laboratory staff with sample receiving and sample check-in.
  • Assist with the preparation of water, sediment and biological samples for toxicological, analytical and taxonomic analysis.
  • Assist with diatom sample receipt, slide preparation, and database management.
  • Strongly adhere to quality assurance/quality control and data integrity protocols.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with daily equipment checks, maintenance and laboratory housekeeping operations.
  • Support GLEC’s Molecular Ecology Laboratory operations with sample collection, processing and analysis using PCR instrumentation.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong collaboration skills and team work ethic.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs and Google Drive applications.
