Job Description

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for a part-time Circulation Assistant in Brown Library. The purpose of this position is to provide circulation services to students, faculty, staff, and community patrons. Oversees work-study employees during evening and Saturday hours. Serves as the responsible party for opening and closing the library during Saturday and evening shifts as assigned. Manages the library’s periodicals.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA’s/Required Qualifications
Work experience in a customer service setting required. Excellent written and oral communication skills required. Must arrive promptly and reliably for assigned shifts at public service points. Position requires excellent public relation skills – the ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with a highly diverse customer base. Basic computer skills, including navigating websites, data entry, and word processing are required. Position requires working with a database program for library records containing a great deal of detailed and confidential information; as a result, position requires excellent attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in work. Ability to solve problems with supervisory consultation or by following standard operating procedures is required. Must be able to lift and shelve items weighing up to 10 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s Degree preferred. Experience with library software and databases preferred. Working knowledge of the terminology, policies, procedures, and equipment of a library is preferred; preference will be given to applicants with prior library work experience that includes assisting library users at a public service desk. Knowledge of community college mission and programs, and the mission of an academic library is preferred.
