POSITION SUMMARY:

The VITA Tax Lead Program Assistant will support the 2023 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The position will assist with the coordination and implementation of the following aspects of Sacred Heart’s 2023 VITA site including volunteer engagement, training, and relationship management, and member outreach.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Program Administration (80 – 90%)

  • Assist with scheduling tax appointments including response to all incoming inquiries, reminder calls to ensure adequate show and document submission rates.
  • Greet members, provide the required tax forms, and review completion of forms before referring them to tax preparers.
  • Assess members’ eligibility, process VITA intake and documentation, and provide information and referral to other programs and services for VITA service applicants.
  • Collaborates with the Employment, Asset Building, and Public Benefits Coordinators before, during, and after VITA sessions to promote SH programs and services.
  • Ensure completion of the electronic filing process for all tax applications.
  • Follows tax procedures and protocols while assisting with the ITIN process.
  • Attends VITA and program meetings.

Leadership (5 – 10%)

  • Supports the core values of the organization by engaging members in our collective efforts.
  • Maintain strong and professional communication with volunteers and promotores
  • Co-lead volunteer schedules, including translation services for in-person appointments
  • Onsite supervisor when coordinator is not available

Other (5 – 10%)

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED:

  • Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Outstanding customer service skills. Strong communication skills, including the ability to deliver difficult messages with compassion and to communicate respectfully with families in stressful situations.
  • Flexible, compassionate, and supportive attitude. Ability to thrive in a flexible, fast-paced environment, while maintaining a positive, solution-oriented approach.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and to work independently with limited supervision when necessary.
  • Computer skills including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Google Suite and ability to quickly learn and develop proficiency with tracking database systems. Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds without assistance. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. with assistance and up to 50 lbs. with assistance. The position requires computer use/walking/sitting/standing for 6 hours per day. Able to walk for an extended period of time. The physical demands described here are representative of what an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.   • Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must complete a DMV and complete background check, and qualify to be insured under SHCS driving policy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Read, speak, and write in English and Spanish.
  • Experience providing culturally competent, supportive services, and linkages to community resources.
  • Positive attitude with great organizational skills.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

The VITA Tax Lead Program Assistant reports to the Economic Justice Networks Manager.

COMPENSATION:

This is a temporary (January 16, 2023 – April 29, 2023), non-exempt, and part-time position paying $25.80/hour. This position does not provide SHCS-sponsored benefits except as required by law.
